As everyone knows, the traffic signal controller has become the key equipment that commanding the transport infrastructure to implement strategy of controlling center. Its performance directly affect not only traffic efficiency and traffic accident rate, but also gradually become an important symbol of measuring the developed degree of city transportation system. However, with the increasing complexity of urban transport environment, traditional traffic signal controllers show the following deficiencies in the process of playing a role:First of all, it commonly uses the parallel structure of power supply, each set of traffic lights are driven by the phase plate of outputting220V alternating current.With the increasing number of traffic signal lamp, the demand of electric cable is also expanding, resultes in the complexity and the construction cost going up. Secondly, a number of high-voltage lines crossing the road, it will inevitably produce a safety hazard after the vehicle running for a long time, and equipment testing is also more difficult. Finally, the anti-interference ability of the existing traffic controller is generally poor. Under the worsening urban electromagnetic environment, it is difficult to run steady, so seriously impacts on the city’s traffic order.Therefore, how to effectively solve the above problem has made the focus of the paper. Considering the reliability, real-time and low consumption requirements of the intelligent traffic control system, at the same time, analysising and comparing of popular field bus technology, after that the paper put forward a researching plan of low voltage driving traffic controller based on CAN bus, which changing the transportation infrastructure node into serial communication structure of sharing field bus. The main researching is as follows:1) Proposed a traffic signal protocol based on CAN standard, and redefined message frame format, transmission rules and network management method.2) Designed a hardware plan of low voltage driving traffic signal controller based on CAN bus, which showed the schematic and PCB design of each unit and expounded the selection principle and design points.3) Studied of the software program of control system. According to the software design process, completed the software writing task of configuration, communication and controlling application.4) The overall control system divided into the system communication and controlling function testing, and the system could run stably and reliably. Through the traffic signal system of above designing and testing, not only reduces the project construction and maintenance cost, but also ensures the safety and reliability. Thus, the scheme of low voltage driving traffic signal controller based on CAN bus conforms to the development trend of intelligent transportation system in China, meets the functional requirements of the general traffic intersection, and it is a good reference for applying the field bus technology to the field of traffic signal controlling.
