A retarder is an auxiliary braking device. It assists the main brake systems ofvehicle to retard driving speed, and improves vehicle’s brake performance and safetyperformance. A new electromechanical retarder was developed by our team to satisfythe domestic market demand for retarders. But there is no ready-made test bed tofulfill systematic test and evaluation for the product’s brake performance. The actualtest had many uncertain factors and high cost. So, it is necessary to design a test bed.We can not only carry on the performance test for the new electromechanical retarder,but also detect other auxiliary braking device through this test bed, which mayprovide test bed for domestic research about retarders.At the beginning of this paper, the background of the new electromechanicalretarder test bed was analyzed, the test status about car retarders at home and abroaddiscussed, and the significance of design electromechanical retarder test bed putforward. And sealing structure of the new electromechanical retarder was improved tosolve the problem of leak. Then by analyzing the product’s working principle, wholestructure and working environment, the overall technology index of the test bed wasconfirmed in the paper.According to the technology index of test bed and the working principle of newelectromechanical retarder, the system structure, working principle and method ofperformance evaluation were discussed, and the overall design scheme was confirmed.Based on the system scheme, the paper designed relevant parts of the test bedincluding the power supply plan, overload protection structure, support structure,power transfer structure and water supply system, etc. And an assembly drawing ofthe test bed was founded, the prototype was assembled.The problems including the short of power and locking of the prototype weredeeply analyzed. Then the sectional flywheel structure was added and the higherpower DC machine adopted to solve the problems mentioned before. Thecorresponding design was completed. The strength and model of vibration of theflywheels were analyzed and its natural frequencies obtained by the finite elementsoftware ANSYS.The arrangement scheme of the sensors on the test bed was presented and thedata acquisition system was designed based on LabVIEW software. The auxiliarypneumatic system was designed to provide power for retarder. At last, the wireless control over the new electromechanical retarder was discussed.
