For a long time, the ramp had been treated as a medium of vertical transportation, as a result, its role of architectural aesthetics and spiritual expression kept unnoticed. Recent years, however, have seen some exploration concerning the horizontal and vertical continuity inarchitecture space, leading to the emergence of more and more architectures involvingcontinuous ramps or tilted planes, which are space-cruise-orientated. It has become necessaryto reconsider the role and value of the ramp in a new context.A well-designed ramp should involve the composition of architectural space and form, therecalling of sense of place as well as the expression of regional culture. As a result, people areoften willing to pass through it, rather than being forced to. When residing on the ramp, it canprovide a combination of dynamic and static types of scenario experience. Therefore, a goodramp must be pleasant in scale, and its functions are diverse and unfixed.Developed from the continuous ramps, the tilted planes can be seen as an extended part of thebuilding base, the ground floor or the roof. Different from the ramp, a tilted plane does notrestrict the touring route or direction, and its interface is open, continuous, and complete.People can freely pass through or walk on the interface, and more importantly, people can stayon it, observing, resting, or carrying out various types of activities such as concerts, movies, shows, lectures, extreme sports, etc. With the intervention of topology in architecture modeling and broadened application ofcomputerized parametric design, there is a tendency of multi-dimensional complex interfaces, whose prototypes can be traced back to tilted planes. When considered in the design ofarchitectures, ramps and tilted planes cannot be isolated from the environment as well ashuman’s feelings. In response to all these aspects, this paper discusses the significant role oframps and tilted planes in architecture designs.
