Tear-gas grenade plays an important role in the anti-terrorism and emergencydisposal. The particle size distribution and concentration of CS gas have great effect onthe tactical effects of tear-gas grenade. A fast and accurate measurement for particle sizeand concentration of CS gas is of great significance for quantitative assessment ofnon-lethal effects on the human body and also provide an important basis for scientificand rational design of tear-gas stimulants.Based on the theory of light scattering by small particles, the measurementmethods for particle size and concentration of CS gas are researched in this paper. TheMie theory of light scattering by small particle and the measurement principle and theinversion algorithm of total light scattering are introduced in detail; A system used togenerate and collect CS gas in the laboratory is developed; Based on the principle oflaser rainbow, A measurement system for the refractive index of a small particle is build, and the refractive indexes of the particles of CS gas under typical laser wavelength aremeasured, which provide accurate parameters for particles sizing of CS gas using lightextinction. On this basis, an experimental system based on light extinction for particlesizing is designed and built, and the average particle size and particle size distributionare measured. The average particle size of CS gas is obtained by measuring lightextinction values of532nm,632.8nm and635nm wavelength; The particle sizedistribution is obtained by measuring the light extinction spectrum of white light andusing advanced particle size distribution inversion software. The average particle sizeand the particle size distribution obtained above are consistent well with the resultsmeasured by microscope, which verifies the accuracy and the reliability of themeasurement system and the inversion algorithm and provides an experimental basis forreal-time, fast, and accurate measurement for particles sizing.
