Low-lift large and medium pumping stations which widely used and displayed the very important function in the water conservancy projects are widely distributed in China.The inlet and outlet conduit is an important part of large and medium pump system with low head, it has significant impact on the pump system performance.Therefore, the optimum hydraulic design for the inlet and outlet conduit must be paid more attention. Currently, there’re various means of the hydraulic design of the inlet and outlet conduit, research results are also rich. But the one-dimensional method of designing the conduit, due to its system conflict, it no longer meets the needs of modern quality.3D optimum hydraulic design methods of the conduit which based on CFD numerical calculation is already being used at this stage, but how to carry out the optimum hydraulic design for the inlet and outlet conduit of the pumping station is still lack of systematic theoretical approach.In order to perfect the optimum hydraulic design theory of the inlet and outlet conduit, further improve the hydraulic performance of pump system with low head, and make this method more and better guide engineering practice。This paper deeply studied and systematically summarized the optimum hydraulic design of the inlet and outlet conduit. The contents include the following aspects:(1) The conception of the inlet and outlet conduit analysis is proposed. It points out the necessity of applying analysis to inlet and outlet conduit. And based on the research data analyzed, the the inlet and outlet conduit analysis of boundary conditions and the feasibility is analysed;(2) Explained the target function in the optimum hydraulic design of the inlet and outlet conduit, and analysis of the characteristics of the objective function;(3)Thinking of optimum hydraulic design of the inlet and outlet conduit was certainly known. Fine optimization methods of optimum hydraulic design of the inlet and outlet conduit is divided into six levels gradually to optimize, and it introduced the optimization methods to a guide to determine the optimal path;(4)Based on summarizing the existing optimum hydraulic design of research data, on the basis of the Microsoft Access database platform, used the Visual Basic language, the database management systems that hydraulic design of the pump system inlet and outlet conduit was developed;(5)The Characteristics of Elbow inlet conduit and siphon outlet conduit geometric figure were analyzed and the parametric model of the elbow inlet conduit and siphon outlet conduit were established;(6) Used of the theorie and method of numerical simulation of turbulent flow theory, and explained the area of numerical calculation and the boundary conditions of the inlet and outlet conduit and pump system;(7)This paper introduced the model test methods and test equipment on the inlet and outlet conduit analysis, settled the problem about how to observe flow pattern and measure the hydraulic loss;(8)The optimum hydraulic design of the pump system was comparatively deep studied in this paper by the help of the proposed method. The optimal solution of the inlet and outlet conduit was determined, the model test for the optimal solution of the inlet,outlet conduit and pump system was completed, then the model test result was compared and analyzed.By applying the modern computer technology and CFD numerical computational theory, The hydraulic design methods of the conduit is improved and optimized,the3D optimum hydraulic design ideas was made clear, and the paper solved the key issues which required in the optimization process.Analyzed theoretically the method is reasonable, and from engineering applications the method is valid. The3D optimum hydraulic design theory of the inlet and outlet conduit of this article can be used to guide the large and medium-sized pumping station to design the inlet and outlet conduit.
