Preliminary Study On The Edge Space Of The City Greenbelt

With the rapid urbanization process, much more attention was paid on the garden greening of city, which plays critical roles in improving the quality of the urban environment, keeping its ecological balance, improving the qualities of the landscape, and promoting the economic development. During these processes, the edge space, as the frontier of the city garden, is very active, since it is the the place where the material flows and information flows from different spaces interact, and it has more complex features, more varied forms than the garden inner core space. So the better design of the edge space of the city garden, a new topic of gardening research, may provide much more landscape and much more ecological benefits.Based on the analysis of the available data, the concept of the edge space of the city garden was defined at first, and then its types were classified in details, also its basic function and the spatial characteristics were clarified. In addition, the aim and principle of the design was summarized on the basis of the theory of the edge space from the aspect of psychology, landscape ecology, environment behavior science and ecology. At the end, the design of the Shanghai Expo Garden was described in details, which further deepened the theory of the edge space design, and may help the design of the edge space in the city garden in the near future.On the basis of previous research, the design of the edge space of the residential green spaces, the parkland, the piazza, the protection green-land and the road green-land was described, the design system of the edge space was established, which offer a kind of new feasible thinking and reference for the study of edge space in city garden.
