Towards the end of20th and beginning of the21st centuries, interest has risen inthe search and development of using renewable alternative energy sources.Windenergy resource is clean renawable energy which can be developed most easily in theworld.Wind power is one of technology of renewable energy generation which has themost mature technology,largest market and low generation cost.It can relieve theenergy crisis effectuvely,protect the global enviroment and increase employmentopportunities to develop wind power.Because of these advantages,many countries ofthe world have been fully aware of the the importance of wind energy. The windturbine and genetator of the permanent magnet direct drive synchronous wind powergeneration systerm is coupled directly without gear box which is expensive, complexand poor reliability. The permanent magnet direct drive synchronous wind powergeneration systerm has some characteristic such as low cost, high reliability, longservice life and so on,it will be one of the develop direction of wind powertechnology.Firstly, a comprehensive introduction to the application of wind power technology,the future direction of development of wind power technology and mainstream modelsof wind power systerm was gived.Secondly, the mathematical model of permanentmagnet direct drive wind power system including the mathematical model of windturbine, the mathematical model of permanent magnet synchronous generator and themathematical model of converter was analyzed,which laied a theoretical foundationfor the performance evaluation and optimal design later. Thirdly,the basic principle ofgenetic algorithms was introduced and the optimization model of permanent magnetdirect drive wind power generator was established based on the characteristics ofgenetic algorithms and permanent magnet direct drive wind power systerm.Finally,thebasic design theory of permanent magnet direct drive wind power generator wasintroduced and the initial design of prototype was done based on the theory.Afterthat,optimal design of the initial prototype was done using the genetic algorithms.Itshowed that the optimum design achieced significant results and genetic algorithm isan effective method in finding the optimal solution during the process of motor designby comparing the data before and after optimization.The performances includingcost,weight,volume,AEO,AEOP and the performance at different rated wind speedand so on of permanent magnet direct drive wind power systerm with5power levels from1MW to10MW were compared.Some conclusions were done by analyzing,whichcan be used as a reference during the design of permanent magnet direct drive windpower systerm and can procide some theoretical reference to the choice of windturbine during the construction of wind farms in the future.
