Tailings pond (dam) plays a very important role in the mine production. It is also important facility to maintain mine production. Since the tailings can hardly to avoid densely populated residential areas and zones, so is also an important hazard. Once a dam-break happened, it would bring serious safety threat to the lives and property of the downstream residents. Therefore, the study on the stability of tailings dam is of important meaning.This paper summed up the general situation of the domestic and international study on stability of the tailings dam; analyses risk factors of the tailings dam and the resulting accidents of various kinds, the tailings dam is divided into the overflowing failure and dam structure crash mode, the latter can be divided into infiltration crash mode, slope instability crash mode and seismic danger crash mode; determining the stability of the tailings dam evaluation index system, the index system was divided into three grade, a total of12indicators; Set Pair Analysis is a method used to identify and evaluate certain/uncertain system. And the tailings dam is a complex dynamic system. There are many uncertainties. We asked the experts to figure out the points based on the index system, They evaluate the stability of the Heshangyu tailings dam of Beijing Shouyun ore mine, and undertook further analysis of the tailings dam stability with fault tree analysis on the basis of this, showing the minimum cut set and path set, pointing out the direction for the safety management of the tailings pond.
