The characteristic of power system becomes complex as the scale of grid getting larger,at the same time, the development of renewable energy brings new challenge. Distributedenergy storage technology is proposed to enhance the stability of power system. As a keyissue in application of distributed energy storage, the optimal allocation of energy storagedevice is discussed in this paper.This paper conducted exploratory research on the optimal allocation of energy storagedevice in multi-machine system, the work focus on four parts: the introduction of energystorage, the analysis on system stability enhancement by energy storage, the optimalallocation of distributed energy storage device’s capacity, and the optimal location ofdistributed energy storage.At first, the paper summaries the boomed development of renewable energy powergeneration and the main problems existing in current power system, and introduce theresearch status of energy storage technology and its optimal allocation. Then, the basicstructure, the control strategies and simulation models of energy storage system commonlyused at present. The simulation model of single machine infinite bus system with energystorage device is built on the platform of PSCAD/EMTDC, the simulation results showedthat the energy storage device can effectively suppress power fluctuation and improve thestability of power systems. For the classic three-machine nine-bus system, the optimalallocation of distributed energy storage device is carried out in two steps. Firstly, a kind ofmulti-objective evolutionary algorithm (MOEA) is adopted to solve the optimal allocation ofdistributed energy storage device’s capacity, considering the stability of power system andeconomy of energy storage device. Secondly, energy function is used to figure out the theoptimal allocation of energy storage device. Finally, the proposed method is verified onMATLAB.
