Modern China was begun from1840. Western countries’ municipal constructionand aesthetic tendency was reflected in the concessions in coastal open port cities.City parks arose. Especially in the Republic period, by the advocacy of Three People’sPrinciple, The establishment of city parks became a responsibility to everygovernment around the China. On March12,1925the death of Dr. Sun Yat-sen shookthe society in different sectors, Xiamen Zhongshan Park was built for thecommemoration of Dr. Sun Yat-sen.Xiamen Zhongshan Park was established in1927. It’s also the first city park inXiamen. For its delicate layout design，brilliant characteristic，it has been qualified thefamous reputation—“The First Park of South China”.As a city park which witnessthe modern history of Xiamen, it has important historical and cultural value. To beginwith, it belongs to the academic sphere of Chinese modern landscape with thecharacteristics of modern urban park. What’s more, as one of the many zhongshanparks, it has strong historical monuments and extensive context value. Thirdly,because of the unique geographical position of southern region of fujian province, as afamous hometown for overseas Chinese, the establishment of Xiamen ZhongshanPark brought the very strong national cohesion. Fourthly, as a first city park openingto the public mass, Xiamen Zhongshan Park contains so much historical events andemotional memory that prossess special significance in Xiamen people’s heart. Lastbut not the least, Xiamen Zhongshan Park is located in the old areas of Xiamen. Theperipheral unique architecture styles have the obvious aesthetic values. Because ofconnecting the famous historical commercial streets, like Zhangshan Road, XiamenZhongshan Park and its surrounding areas are qualified huge potential value.For the abundant historical monuments and broad context continuity, XiamenZhongshan Park exceeding the pure landscape garden category, can be regarded as ahistoric urban landscape. However, historic urban landscape also has the dynamicchanging characteristics which belong to landscape features. Basing on the historictransformation and current using-situation, by analyzing Florence Charter andRecommendation on Historic Urban Landscape, this degree paper is devoted to do theresearch on preservation and development of Xiamen Zhongshan Park, and putsforward relevant Suggestions.This dissertation intend to seek a way forward both in having a maximum protection in the landscape of Xiamen Zhognshan Park, meanwhile exploring anddisplaying its deserved historical and cultural value to the spectator via deeply mininghistorical context, studying historical variation, investigating current using situation,at the same time combining the leading spirit of the above international documents.
