Free piston linear alternator is a novel engine that develops in recentyears. It is directly coupling between free piston engine and linearalternator, which is suitable for hybrid vehicles. It is crankless, and thepiston movement is determined by the engine operating conditions.Compact construction and wide fuel adaptability are featured. This dissertation presents a two-stroke dual-piston free piston linearalternator based on the1D and3D numerical simulations of the operation ofthis type of linear alternator.1D simulation is based on AMESim, and anoverall system model is established to focus on piston motion, power andeconomic performance.3D simulation is based on AVL Fire, and a3Dmesh including intake&exhaust port and cylinder is established to focus onscavenging and combustion process. The simulation results of free pistonlinear alternator are compared with conventional engine. A parametricstudy is also performed to predict the engine behavior. The results show that free piston linear alternator has a symmetricmotion. The acceleration at the top dead center of free piston linear alternator is about twice as much as that of the conventional engine. Thescavenging efficiency in loop-scavenged free piston linear alternator is96.7%,which is higher than that in conventional engine. The parametric studyshows the significant effects of reciprocating mass, bore, load, ignition timing, inlet pressure, scavenging port position and equivalence ratio on theoperation performance.
