The application of rock cutting with pick cutters in rock fracture engineer iswider than ever since, however, the estimating methods for forces imposed on thepicks are rarely mature. The core work of this thesis is researching the forces imposedon picks and energy consumption during linear rock cutting with single cutter, whichis basic research in rock cutting with cutters for improving the dredging ability ofcutter suction dredger. The rock cutting mechanism was discussed based on theexisted theories and rock cutting tests, and the effects of rock properties, cuttingparameters and cutter geometry on cutting force and specific energy was analyzed indetail. The relationships between cutting force, specific energy and each ofinfluencing parameters were discussed, and regression formula were created with thesupport of the rock cutting theories and test data and necessary analysis of variancewas applied. The viewpoints that the effects of rake angle on rock cutting mechanismcan be reflected by its effects on the power ratio of the uniaxial compressive strengthand tensile strength, and that rock cutting with chisel cutter can be equivalentlytreated as rock cutting with conical cutter and two dimensional rock cutting wereproposed. Based on those viewpoints, new estimating formula were created whichwere preliminary proved to be much more suitable for rock cutting with pick cuttersthan those existed by comparing to the tests data. This leaded a conclusion that theviewpoints proposed in this thesis were correct. After the analysis, the issues need tobe researched further through rock cutting tests were determined, and test schemeswere designed. The tests to determining the rock properties will be used for rockcutting tests were performed and the tests data were sorted. As basic research in rockcutting, the estimating formulas for cutting force and specific energy and conclusionfrom this thesis are not only suitable for research in rock dredging of cutter suctiondredger, but also good references for other rock fracture devices.
