Since the1960s, the trucking industry has been a huge development. Sustained brakingsystem for heavy vehicles that usually are driven on the mountain road is essential. As one ofmany kinds of sustained braking systems, engine braking can provide a large and stablebraking power to the vehicle in order to ensure that the car is traveling at a steadyspeed.Although this sustained braking system used in heavy vehicles has been quite a longtime, there is less research about the performance of engine braking system. In this paper,we cansee a in-depth study on the performance of engine braking system by the test method. In this paper,we can get a detailed analysis of its structure, working principles, designfeatures and the instructions for use. Sum up the features and advantages of the engine brakingsystem by the mothod of comparing with several other commonly used sustained brakingsystems. We do a flat road test and process the experiment data to get the braking torque andbraking power of engine brake system.Compare engine braking with engine-driven,to get thepercentage of braking power’s share of engine-driven power.Establish a car modle of the downhill, and calculate the stable and secure downhill speedunder different stalls respectively. The results provide the valuable reference for the driving safety of the drivers and forramp test.
