The steel sandwich plate system (SPS), as a new type of marine composite material, ispaid more and more attention to domestic and foreign researchers. This paper focuses on thestructural design and strength assessment of steel sandwich plate with respect to its wideapplication in hull structure, and the following aspects are studied,1. The method for the structural analysis of SPS material is investigated. A structuralanalysis of a rectangular SPS plate is performed according to Reissiner theory, equivalencemethod and FEM respectively. Several key factors effecting FEM were studied;2. The buckling and ultimate strength of SPS structures are studied and the failure modeof the SPS structure is analyzed;4. The traditional design method and the new theory of structural optimization of SPS areresearched. Taking a part of the structure of a bulk carrier as an example, the three cargo holdsof the ship is optimized designed. The results is compared with the original ship and thetraditional SPS design method to verify the effectiveness and the feasibility of theoptimization method;5. Optimization design method identified in this paper is carried out on an oil tanker. Theyielding and buckling strength of the optimized SPS ship structure are assessed based ondirect calculation. The results were compared with that of normal steel ship structure to reflectweight loss and economic superiority of the optimized hull structure.
