Crankshaft is one of the most complicated parts of diesel engine. It’s characterized ashigh cost, hard to manufacturing, complicated stress states and bearing large loads. Theperformance of crankshaft directly affects the reliability and the operation life of diesel engine.Because of the complex shape of the crankshaft, there is serious stress concentrationphenomenon around the fillet and other parts. The condition of bearing lubrication ofcrankshaft has a significant effect on its reliability and output power.A method combining finite element method and multi-body dynamics simulation isapplied to simulate one type of multi-cylinder diesel engine crankshaft system in this paper. And the finite element analysis results have been verified by single cylinder crankshaft stresstest. The main contents of this paper are: firstly carries the transient dynamics analysis oncrankshaft using finite element analysis software ANSYS. It can well and truly gained thetresses and strain in each part of the crankshaft, and check the crankshaft fatigue strength. And then static stress test has been taken on single throw crankshaft. The strain situationunder every loading condition at the dangerous points on the crankshaft could be obtained.Comparing the stress values calculated by ANSYS with the stress values measured from thetesting points, the strain trends getting through both methods are consistent. Finally, usingmulti-body dynamics software Excite, completes the simulation with one work cycle. Thereare conclusions that the actual work of overall crankshaft torsional conditions are good, strength at each crank arm is evenly, the main bearing minimum film thickness and maximumfilm pressure is also among allowable value range. In this paper, the crankshaft performance has been analyzed, and the stress-strain test onsingle throw crankshaft has been finished. The research results can be offered as referencedata for the calculation, optimization design and innovation design of diesel crankshaft infuture.
