Ship compartments partition and arrangement is an important aspect of ship general arrangement design, also a constantly repeating, numerous amendments, spiral process. Most of the previous way is using mouse and keyboard interaction provided by CAD system, complete the ship compartments partition by design repeatedly and stepwise refinement; or built2D or3D equipment graphics library based on menu management through secondary development of CAD software, finish the ship compartments partition by calling the graphics. The application of CAD/CAM has improved design accuracy and contributed to improve the ship design and construction efficiency, but still these are "try-type" design methods. With intelligent technology, an expert system on ship compartments partition and arrangement design is established. This provides a theoretical basis for the solution of the main design parameters, laid a theoretical and technical foundation for seeking a new way of ship compartment arrangement design.The purpose of this paper is to improve the efficiency and reusability of knowledge of ship design, provide a design method for a ship compartment design. Start with the knowledge-based intelligent design method, the overview of the development and its application in shipbuilding is analyzed, domestic and international situation and development trend of CAD technology is discoursed, the basic theory and key technology of intelligent design such as composition, acquisition, representation and usage of knowledge is studied. According to the design features of ship compartment partition and arrangement, using expert system to solve such problems is proposed. And the theory and application genetic algorithm is introduced. Knowledge base, Knowledge base management systems and reasoning systems on ship compartment partition and arrangement is built. And compartments channel design is optimized using genetic algorithm. Knowledge engineering module of CATIA V5software is used in system development. The overall structure and basic process framework of intelligent design is built according to Compartment design features, and Knowledge-based intelligent design system of ship compartments partition is developed using VB, then been verified by A real ship superstructure design.
