With social development, energy and environmental problems have become increasingly prominent. With low-noise, zero emissions, more and more attention have been paid to the electric vehicles around the world, electric cars have become the protagonist of automotive industry in21st century. Battery is the important power source for electric vehicles today, and battery management system (BMS) plays a vital role for electric vehicles and keeps other electrical equipment run safety and reliable. Because the rapid development of electric vehicles, more and more requirements that battery management system should be faced to. This paper designed a high-performance battery management system for lithium-ion battery.The main functions of the system are:First, the management of charging and discharging and the monitoring of status for each section of battery which works in electric vehicles with series way to ensure uniform charge and discharge and to prevent overcharge and over discharge in order to reach the target which makes battery run safe, increase the battery’s capacity and extend the cycle life of it. Second, monitor the battery voltage, current, temperature and other information reasonably, then estimate the remaining power of the battery with the integration of the battery voltage and current and the cycle time that the battery has already used before to prompt driver that how many miles left. Third, this paper proposed intelligent over-voltage and current detection program.How to accurately estimate the remaining battery power is a key technology of the battery management system. This paper uses the method which combines voltage correction and ampere-hour estimation to estimate the remaining battery power can meet the system requirements well. The design of high-performance battery management system can watch low voltage, over current, over temperature and other unusual circumstances. Then it can balance charging for each single battery depending on remaining battery power in order to avoid differences among each single battery with the same level of their battery state of charge.This paper uses the host controller DSP and inferior controller ATMAGE16to achieve a high-performance battery management system, and introduce a collection program for information of battery, and gives the design for protection circuit for each design of battery management system. With the functional block diagram, schematic diagram, PCB layout and software flowchart of this system have been given, the paper describes principles of battery management system hardware and software.
