There is a lot of soft soil foundation in the costal regions of our country which is formed by Beach, the mudflats and surrounded by sea land building. Inorder to meet the demand of the engineering applications, the application of soft soil foundation is becoming more and more important. Because of the longe effect of natural role, forming a lay of soil that its properties is very good, that is called dry crust. Natural scale layer can meet the demand of the low load bearing capacity and deformation, the widely use in the basic engineering construction. But, the forming of the natural scale layer need long time, can not meet the requirements of the basic construction. By using the method of artificial structure, forming a lay of hard shell that have a certain thickness and strength in the surface, that is called the artificial hard shell. In addition to its natural scale layer of basic properties, also has the characteristics of short construction period, the low cost, the thickness and strength can control.The contents of the paper studies as follows:(1) Analyzing from the characteristics of the natural scale layer, based on this, discussed the formation and function of the artificial hard shell, comparative analysis the characteristics of the natural scale layer and artificial hard shell;(2) Firstly, puts forward the engineering method of rib beam, Through the rib beam can play full role of the hard shell and the rib beam;(3) Hard shell has certain diffusion function, and analysis the stress diffusion foundation of the soft soil foundation overlying hard shell with rib beam, draw that the rib beam have a little influence to the diffusion of hard shell, and in engineering practice can use stress diffusion angles that are given of related standard;(4) We research distribution of the additional stress of the soft soil foundation with artificial hard shell, also when overload, using the theory of Winkler foundation model and finite element software GEO-Slope2004SIGMA/W. And give the thickness of hard shell, modulus ratio upper and lower, load strength and load width, the role of the influence of additional stress distribution on the soft soil. Conclusion is a bigger influent factor is the thickness of the hard shell to the additional stress distribution;(5) The finite element numerical simulation method is used to study the influence of the additional stress distribution on the interface of up and down the soil when change the rib beam geometric parameters (the height and width);(6) Analyzes the load distribution and stress ratio of the soft soil foundation overlying hard shell with rib beam on the ribb beam and the soft soil, and do some research on the settlement, and compare with no rib beam. Finally, Summarizes the work done by the full-text and have prospect on the next study.
