Refrigerants are working fluids in the refrigeration systems. Refrigeration cycles explain how thermal management systems exchange energy with the environment, and thus all refrigeration and air-conditioning systems move heat from high to low-temperature reservoirs according to these cycles. It can be seen that the refrigerant (or working fluid) has a very important effect on the refrigeration cycle and design and operation of the refrigeration system. With the growing importance to the environment, the traditional refrigerants (HCFC-22, R502) have become less attractive, and study of alternative refrigerants in the refrigeration and air-conditioning industry have become a hot topic. In this paper, the cycle performances of the three refrigerants with the fluoroethane (HFC-161) are investigated and their contents are as follows:1. Reviewing the current state of the alternative refrigerant for HCFC-22in small refrigeration equipments, and proposing the HFC-161as a substitution of HCFC-22. The theoretical and experimental study of cycle performances for HFC-161, HFC-32and HFC-410A is conducted. The results show that the refrigerant HFC-161has a higher COP and the lower discharging temperature, which has a potential for substituting the refrigerant HCFC-22used in a small refrigeration system.2. Reviewing the current state of the alternative refrigerant for HFC-134a in the car air-conditioning system, and proposing the HFC-161+HFC-134a as a substitution of HFC-134a. The theoretical and experimental study of cycle performances for HFC-134a, HFC-161+HFC-134a is conducted. The results show that COP of the new refrigerant HFC-161+HFC-134a is similar to that of HFC-134a, but it has a higher cooling capacity and a low GWP. Therefore it has a potential for substituting the refrigerant HFC-134a used in the car air-conditioning system.3. Reviewing the current state of the alternative refrigerant for HFC-404A in low temperature refrigeration system, and proposing the mixed refrigerant HFC-161+HFC-125+HFC-143a with the new faction as a substitution of HFC-404A The theoretical and experimental study of cycle performances for HFC-161+HFC-125+HFC-143a, HFC-404A is conducted. The results show that COP of the new refrigerant HFC-161+HFC-125+HFC-143a is higher than that of HFC-404A, but it has a low GWP. Therefore it has a potential for substituting the refrigerant HFC-404A used in the low temperature refrigeration system.
