Creep of rock exists widely in various types of rock engineering, such as theslope, dams, underground tunnel, mining column, especially, creep of soft rock intunnel is very evident. Therefore, the study of creep of rock has guiding significancein rock engineering. Creep theory of rock has been considered as the frontier topics ofrock mechanics research recently, the research develop rapidly and get fruitfulachievement. However, creep theory of rock is still immature, the study of creepmodel of rock is a difficult and hotspot issues in creep theory of rock. With the rapiddevelopment of damage theory recently, it is used widely for analyzing deformationcharacteristics of material. Therefore, creep of rock will be discussed and studieddeeply by using damage theory in this paper.First, the paper analyzed several important factors that affect creep of rock; anddetailed several classic component models, by comparison of these component models, limitation of such models and their scope of application were analyzed.Secondly, based on the analysis of creep process of rock, a new rheologicalelement was developed by introducing damage theory; and by assembling the newrheological element with basic rheological element, a nonlinear creep model of rockwas established, which can reflect whole creep process of rock; and a simple andfeasible method to determine the model parameters was proposed; at last, the modelwas validated by test results.Thirdly, long-term strength of rock is an important parameter in creep model ofrock, and it has significance for long-term stability design in rock engineering. Withanalyzing the creep process of rock by damage theory, relationship of long-termstrength of rock and damage threshold was established, thereby a new method todetermine long-term strength of rock was proposed. Finally, according to the analysis of the creep process of rock, classic H-K creepmodel was improved considering damage of rock, the model can fully reflect thewhole creep process of rock; and a method to determine model parameters wasproposed; at last, the model was validated by test results.
