With the increasingly rapid economic development as well as the demand for basic project constructions, shield tunneling has become a main construction method in project, such as the rail transportation, municipal pipelines, irrigation, and natural gas and so on. The cutterhead is a critical component of shield machine and it plays a major role to break rock and support the tunneling interface. The reasonable arrangement of cutters is the guarantee of tunneling efficiently and stably. Based on substantial literature, the arrangement law of cutters and tools combination and neural network strata identification are studied. The main researches of this paper can be summarized as follows:(1) The soil-breaking mechanism of disc cutter is analyzed deeply. Through the study of failure area on the side soil, the cutter combination of cutting soil force prediction model under different combinations is established, found that the sequential cutting combination is better than the same time cutting combination.(2) The cutting characteristics and rock breaking mechanism of the combination of cutter and cutter, the advanced knife and cutter, the cutter and disc cutter is analyzed deeply. The combination cutting model is created by using ANSYS/LS-DYNA software. Through the analysis of simulation results, the optimal parameters of cutter combinations is obtained.(3) The arrangement law of typical cutters of cutterhead on the composite EPB shield is analyzed. For the arrangement of the advanced knife and cutter, the number and layout of the required helix spiral the radius of the area are determined based on the cutter by the force balance and the principle of equal cutter wear. For the arrangement of the disc cutter and cutter, the layered arrangement of the method is used. Finally, the cutterheads are designed according to the geological conditions.(4) The neural network strata identification based on the tunneling parameters is developed. Considering the shield tunneling practice of a rail transit, the method of strata identification is studied by using neural network pattern recognition technology.
