Electrical locomotive main transformer is one of important locomotive equipment in electric traction systems, which is the key equipment for voltage transformation and power distribution. It is also the largest in the weight and size and the most expensive single equipment in electric locomotive or EMU (Electric Multiple Units). So electric locomotive main transformer, whose condition directly impact on the operation of electrical railway system, is the heart and is the power source of the whole train. The production of rail transport will be interrupted, while a breakdown is occurred in traction transformer.Failures of electric locomotive main transformer are mostly caused by expansion of partial defects, but there is still a lack of effective methods to detect partial defects now. Main transformer’s quality status and parameter characteristics mostly have a real performance only in the dynamic process when electric locomotive is running, and some failures will occur only under the conditions of long time running. So it is necessary to closely monitor the parameters of main transformer in operation, analysis and process these acquired data, to grasp the variation of operating parameters, provide real and reliable data for the repair and maintenance and prevent insulation to lower and short circuit and other accidents.There are distinctions between main transformer and conventional transformer on structure and operation characteristics. This paper firstly introduces the main circuit of electric locomotive, winding structure of main transformer, cooling principle and assembled protection, and analyzes the operation characteristics and common faults of main transformer. On the basis of studying working principle and characteristics of main transformer, we design and develop an operating information collection and analysis system of electric locomotive main transformer, which consists of two separate parts, operating information collection device will acquire real-time oil temperature and primary voltage and current, operating information analysis software will analyze the collected data.On the basis of analyzing the functions and performances of operating information collection device, the paper designs the framework program and important modules in detail, and completes the design and development of device hardware and programs. In this device, the entire system is controlled by the manage core μPSD3334D, signals are converted from analog to digital by high-precision AD chip AD7327, sampling information is stored to SDV6.0storage module, principles of all parts are described and corresponding PCB design is given. The software of the device is developed using Windows integrated development Environment μVsion3and PSDsoft Express software, which introduces the entire workflow of the device, and explains the working principles and functions of initialization module, self-test module, analog to digital converter module, data storage module.Operation information analysis software of electric locomotive main transformer is also designed in modular design concept, which is written in C++language and developed using Microsoft Visual Studio. The software is consisted of data read and conversion module, data processing module, waveform display module and auxiliary function module, the principles and functions of each module are introduced.The functions and performances of the operation information collection and analysis system are tested and validated in laboratory, and the results show that the system has reached the designed purpose and practical requirements. With the rapid development of electrified railway, the system will be widely used and have large economic and social benefits.
