Decades of axial flow fans is adopted by direct air-cooled system to provide air-cooled condenser with cooling medium, but the air-cooled cluster fans are different from the parallel fans in operating characteristics. Experimental study on operating characteristics of fan base is of great significance to the safe and efficient operating of direct air-cooled system. This paper described the early experimental work on operating characteristics of fan base, numerically simulated on the air-cooled condenser unit’s performance to verify the reliability of experimental design. Established the design on test platform of fan base’s operating characteristics, completed the selection of experimental equipments, formulated specific test methods, which laid an important foundation on the smooth operating of experiment. The flow and heat transfer performance of air-cooled condenser units of actual and experimental size has been simulated. The results show that: Comparing with symmetry boundary condition, the setting of periodic boundary condition is more realistic; the neglecting of motor is feasible when modeling the air-cooled condenser unit; the assumption of air’s steady flow in air-cooled unit is reasonable; in present condition, the combination of radiator model and porous medium model is the most appropriate way to simulate the performance of air-cooled unit; considering the heat transfer term will increase the flow of air-cooled fan and the air flow outside air-cooled unit, but has little effect on the flow characteristics inside and outside air-cooled unit; either actual size or experimental size, the flow characteristics of air-cooled units are similar, which means that the air-cooled fans of experimental size can replace the fans of actual size to complete the experiment on operating performance of fan base; the change of design in air flow of air-cooled condenser unit can improve the flow of air-cooled fan. The numerical simulation verified the feasibility of experiment on operating performance of fan base, optimized the numerical simulation ways of air-cooled unit, provided the basis of air-cooled condenser’s optimal design.
