Harmonic gear drive has been widely applied in many fields such as aerospace, optical instrument and general machinery etc., owing to its big ratio of transmission, high transmission accuracy, light weight and other characteristics. This leads to the emergence of many different types of harmonic gear drive. Supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China "Study on Elastic Kinematic Geometry and Tooth Profile Design Method of Harmonic Gear Drive"(No.50975038), the author of this paper presents a thorough study of meshing performance of harmonic drive with different wave generator and maximum deflection coefficient.Firstly, this paper illustrates the fundamentals of harmonic gear drive. The elastic deformation function has been given with different wave generator, Meanwhile, the principles of choosing the main engaging parameters and structure design of the components in different harmonic drives have been discussed.On the basis of harmonic drive kinematic model, a calculating model of local meshing of harmonic drive was established. According to the deformation function and conjugation theory of harmonic drive, for any given tooth shape, the conjugate area’s rotation angle and conjugate profile can be solved, and the track of flexspline profile’s movement relative to circular spline profile has been gotten.Based on MATLAB, the harmonic drive deformation function and structure design software has been developed. And taking the cup and ring harmonic drive whose transmission ratio is50for example respectively, the motion between flexspline and circular spline tooth is simulated, and by checking the interference of the profiles, the reasonable engaging parameters and structure parameters has been determined.The paper analyzed the coefficient of maximum deflection and different wave generator’s effect on the meshing performance including meshing clearance, maximum depth in engaging and contact ratio etc. Meanwhile, based on ABAQUS, the single-chain ring harmonic gear model is established. The assembly model is established with general module, Standard, discussing the sensitivity analysis between maximum deflection coefficient and assembly stress. Based on Explicit, the relation between maximum deflection coefficient and flexspline stress has been analyzed. The methods and results provide reference for the structure design of harmonic drive. It has very significant practical value to improve efficiency and quality design.
