Line-start single phase permanent magnet synchronous motors(PMSM) are one type of permanent magnet synchronous motors with single phase power supplied.It owns the features of both single-phase induction motor and permanent magnet synchronous motor. Besides, it is started by the asynchronous torque generated by the squirrel-cage winding and the load is driven by the synchronous torque generated by excited and armature magnetic fields of permanent magnet. Compared with single phase induction motor with the same capacity, the line-start single phase permanent magnet synchronous motor is highly efficient and small with high power factors, so it has broad prospects for development in the field of household electrical appliances.First of all, this paper introduces the features, applications, starting methods as well as the stator and rotor structure of line-starting single-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor, focusing on analyzing the influences of various starting methods and rotor magnetic circuit structure upon the performances of this motor. Furthermore, it analyzes and deduces the fundamental theories of self-starting single-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor. Meanwhile, it briefly describes the determination of major dimensions and design of stator and rotor blanking pieces as well as the winding.Next, this paper analyzes several critical electromagnetic parameters (synchronous and armature reaction reactance, direct-axis armature reaction reactance, no load leakage flux coefficient, and pole-arc coefficient, etc) that largely influence the performance of self-starting single-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor though calculation and analysis by adopting Maxwell (software of Ansoft Company used for finite element analysis of magnetic field).Finally, this paper analyzes and deduces the steady-state and starting processes of line-start single phase permanent magnet synchronous motor. Furthermore, taking the compressor motor of a55W fridge as example, this paper applies Maxwell (software of Ansoft Company used for finite element analysis of magnetic field) to analyze and emulate the steady-state and starting processes. Thus, various characteristic curves of the processes are obtained and they are basically in accordance with technical indicators, which has guiding significance for the design of such motor.
