With the implementation of new rural construction in the outline of the Eleventh Five-year Plan published in2005, the whole country has engaged in building new countryside. However, some problems such as the lack of rural image showed up gradually. Against this background, this article tried to do the research on the rural image of new countryside based on environmental psychology theories with Wangyin town in Shandong province as a study case. Firstly, the architectural elements which had distinctive characteristics of the countryside were extracted. Rural elements can be divided into three classes:architectural elements, environmental elements and space elements. Based on them, the characteristics of traditional rural image and the performance of symbolic image were described. By means of the description of the rural images, natural, farming and local characteristics can be summarized from architect and environment aspects. And then, through the extraction of related notions in environmental psychology, such as environmental perception, environmental cognition, environment-behavior relationship and field experience, these theories were used to analyze the elements of rural image. This article compared the results of traditional countryside and new rural analysis, problems of rural image existed in new rural construction were found. Corresponding suggestions would be given. Results showed that the lack of rural image indeed existed in new countryside construction. It had some effect on people’s work and everyday lives in some certain degree. Attention should be paid on this problem immediately.
