Fire classification standard for building materials is a fundament of fire performance evaluation for building and decorate materials and products. Fire classification system is the base of fire design code, fire safety engineering design of building and fire performance based evaluations. This paper compared the different versions of fire performance classification systems through introducting fire development of building and exposure condition of materials. This paper is aim to establish a fire classification standard which could be used to evaluate fire performance of materials reasonably and scientificly, or make some reasonable suggestions in revising or preparing work of fire classification system.This paper especially displayed the differences of the two versions of classifications through compairing testing principals and methods. It seems that GB8624-2006is much more advanced with reasonable fire performance parameters evaluating in development of fire. Testing and classification were carryed out on different types of common building materials according to those standard test methods and the correlation between the two versions is established finally. It analyses the discrepancy existing in harmonization works of application of GB8624and fire design codes and recommend that it need to increase the product categories and ranking criterion. The big scal fire tests have been carried out for external insulation wall of building and some recommends are gave to classify of materials. Finally it prepared the draft of fire classification code for building materials of GB8624.
