The great construction of Intercity MRT marks that rail transit in China has entered a new stage. At present, intercity rail network has covered major cities of China, quickly narrowing the distance between the regions and effectively promoting the socio-economic development. Lots of small and medium-sized cities also actively join this network of convenient transportation and rapid economic development which place the city in a greater development region. In Japan and some European countries, Intercity railway has become the framework of transport link between cities. And Intercity railway station is always the center for the regional development, even some large traffic terminals are the city’s development centers. The construction of Intercity station significantly guides the spatial form of the cities and regions, as well as the socio-economic development. The construction of Intercity railway station area has also attracted many industry insiders and professionals’attention. However, due to the relative late development of railway transportation in China, the theoretical research and practical experience in this field are still insufficient.Based on the general situation of current Intercity railway construction and its characteristic, this paper points out the defect of the domestic and foreign research status. It explores the aspects that we should pay attention to when building China’s Intercity railway station and studies its planning methods in context of the relevant theories and excellent examples. The area in the front of the Intercity railway station is divided into three parts to work, that is, function planning, land-use and traffic organization.This essay goes through the theories related to the planning for the area that sits in the front of Intercity station, including TOD theory, urban catalyst theory and the rent theory. And it puts forward the implications on the Intercity station area planning construction given by each theory. By analyzing the traditional railway station area construction and concluding its existing problems, the paper explores some good cases in foreign countries, mainly Japan and Europe’s cases. Moreover, it proposes the experience we can learn from to make our Intercity station planning designs, combining with the service condition of Intercity stations built in China.The system conducts the research on the planning methods of Intercity railway station area. Firstly, it says that functional planning is a process of dynamic development. In according with function, Intercity station could be classified as traffic nodes and urban strongholds. On the base of their impact area study, the author respectively learn each of land-use feature and discuss the strategy of land planning in Intercity station area in China. In this paper, the author also study on the Intercity station area’s traffic organization, namely the planning method of station square, with the discussion of issues that different types of Intercity station square should pay attention to. From general speaking, the role of Intercity station playing in guiding the urban spatial form development and regional economy development is discussed.Finally, put theory into practice. The author takes Xipu station in Chengdu as a case to make station area planning design. First, define the function of Xipu station. It suggests the position of current Intercity station of China, the position of Xipu station developed from current traffic nodes to urban strongholds. According to the Zone Theory, and the situation of Xipu station surrounding roads and buildings, the scope of study is determined. Discussing the land-use of Xipu station area based on the site survey, the author indicates the optimization plan of land-use and does the design of traffic organization on the station square.
