The Suburbanization Of Valley City In The Western China Since1990

Suburbanization is city developing process that the city in Western developed countries go through. Generally speaking, it goes through the process of absolute centralization, relative centralization, relative decentralization, and then absolute decentralization. Suburbanization is urban social spatial phenomenon that influences the social spatial structure of inner city and outer city. Its notable manifestation is the outside moving of population, industry and commerce, finally absolute decentralization of central urban zone and absolute centralization of suburb area. New China is a young country in the industrial, social-economy development and many other aspects. The phenomenon of suburbanization appeared many years later than the Western developed countries and the academic research about suburbanization is also juvenile (Started around1990). Also with the special condition of the society, suburbanization demonstrates differently. Academic research about suburbanization also focuses on the Eastern part of China, lacking of the research about Western part of China.The dissertation uses a case study of suburbanization in Lanzhou to explain the phenomena of suburbanization in the valley city in Western China basing on the study of both home and abroad. Firstly, this dissertation reviews the phenomena of suburbanization in both China and Western developed countries, systematically summaries the development process of suburbanization at home and abroad, generalizes the problems during the suburbanization. Then, it builds the theoretical model of suburbanization in valley-city in Western China. Finally, it takes the typical valley-city Lanzhou as an example, carrying out the empirical research of suburbanization in valley-city in Western China. It analyzes in both population suburbanization and residential suburbanization by using census data1990,2000,2010and questionnaire and interview in Lanzhou.
