ABSTRACT: A large number of steel pipes are applied in Oil exploration, construction, ships, aviation and other important industrial areas. In recent years with the rapid development of aviation industry, the construction of a large number of houses, the number of use of the steel pipe is more and more. Steel pipe’s defects harm society and property. So defecting steel pipe’ detect is particularly important. At the present stage methods of defecting steel pipe’ detect has magnetic particle, eddy current, ultrasonic and so on. But Most of the magnetic particle and eddy current’s detection rate is slow; now the most common approach of detecting steel pipe is ultrasonic. In the steel pipe ultrasonic testing, according to the number of probes to use, the probe divided into two, one is single probe, two is composite probe. But in the steel pipe ultrasonic automatic testing most is multi-probe that is composite probe. The paper designs a new composite probe. By changing the shape of the probe internal chip increase sound field coverage width and speed up the detection rate. The paper completes the main work:1. Introduce the steel pipe’ defects in the manufacture. Elaborate theory of the steel pipe ultrasonic testing. Introduce method of the steel pipe ultrasonic testing and scanning.2. Design a new ultrasonic composite probe. Increase sound field coverage width. Design the external structure of a supporting probe3. Design test program. Build a test device. Inspect test results. Test results are analyzed.4. Introduce the actual application of the composite probe. Introduce the installation and commissioning of the composite probe and the composite probe the actual detecting technique. Defect results are analyzed.
