In recent years, the functions of Landscape Architecture have been researched a lot due to their increasing values in the rural and urban planning and construction, of which the production function is an important aspect that command attention. In fact the production function has already taken place in the urban space for years, and productive urban landscape has become a hot topic both at home and abroad, and researchers try to solve or help relieve a kind of urban problems through using production elements in the urban landscape. This paper studies on the production phenomenon both in today’s Landscape Architecture and the historical gardens, tracing back to have a more in-depth and comprehensive understanding of the changes of the production function. The paper points out that the production function was an important aspect in the Chinese and Western traditional gardens. Production elements once had also become the themes of gardening in Chinese classical gardens, which were historical phenomena cannot be ignored, and the production phenomena and the use of production elements usually had close relationship with the garden-scales. While in the west, there was a cultural tradition to have production and utility functions in designing gardens, the history of gardening in the West was accompanied by production phenomenon and is still affecting the contemporary landscape design.Under the situation of urbanization, the paper discusses about the production phenomena in the contemporary landscape architecture practice with case analysis, analyzes the main factors affecting urban production phenomenon, and summarizes the research and application both domestic and abroad. And discussed the main points to note when planning and designing a productive landscape in the city, pointing out that the production elements in landscape and open space should be suitable for urban environment, be integration with the urban space, and establish a good management system. Finally, the paper brings in three concept programs, which are design competition programs the author participated in during the graduate study. The programs discussed about the concept of applying production elements according to the site’s history, nature, demand conditions, using the strategy of productive landscape to help relieve the problems the sites faces, and aims to achieve nice social and cultural benefits, as well as economic and ecological benefits.
