Hybrid excitation synchronous machine (HESM) organically combines the advantages ofpermanent magnet synchronous machine and field wounded synchronous machine. The novel HESMdrive system which possesses features of high output torque at low speed, high efficiency, and widerange of speed-regulation, has a bright future for the EV drive system and aircraft power system. Thestudy of structure optimization and control technology lays a foundation for the practical applicationof this novel HESM drive system. This paper is centered on the research on the novel HSEM drivesystem.The basic structure and principle of the HESM with the magnetic shunt rotor are discussed firstly.In order to reduce the volume and weight of the novel HESM, the optimum method is proposed. Fieldregulation performance is verified by the results of three dimensional finite element analysis(3D-FEA). And a HESM with dual magnetic shunt rotor is proposed. Field regulation performanceis also analyzed by3D FEA.Based on the research on the feature and the work principle of the novel HESM, the controlstrategy of coordinating the armature current and excitation current is proposed.The mathematical model of the novel HESM is inferred. According to the results of3D-FEA, theMATLAB model of the novel HESM drive system is established. The system performance is verifiedby the simulation results.The structure principle of the novel HESM drive system is introduced, and then the designdetails on the hardware and software of the system are discussed. A prototype machine of a24kWHESM and its digital controller are developed. The experimental results verify the excellentperformance of the novel HESM. The harmonic component of the back electromotive force(EMF) isvery low, which indicates that the vector control method is suitable for the novel HESM drive system.Field weakening control is easy to realize by regulating the excitation current. The novel HESM withthe magnetic shunt rotor has great application value for the EV drive system and aircraft powersystem.
