With the national economy sustained and rapid growth in our country, the constructing ofexpressway,railways and other infrastructure are increasing in soft soil area. Because of softsoil have the characteristics of high compressibility and low permeability, we can find manyexamples that the building was damaged owing to foundation settlement in soft soil. So,how to reasonable and accurate estimate the soft foundation settlement for the calculation ofembankment ‘s volume and reasonable selection the time of the upper structure constructinghave the important meaning.In view of this, this paper according to the deficiencies oftraditional embankment settlement calculation,based on the observation of foundationsettlement in Peng-Hu expressway s, and used the numerical analysis method, to improvedthe embankment settlement calculation, basically do some works in the following:(1) In the beginning this paper, the author introduceing the project summary and thescheme of embankment settlement observation in Peng-Hu expressway.Through the compareof settlement-time curve which acquired in the observation, we can got the influence of thesettlement thickness of soft soil, drainage condition, the filling velocity and fill interval toembankment settlement.To calculated the settlement curve equation, and gained thecharacteristics of settlement curve which apply to Peng-Hu expressway.(2) Expounds the superimposed stress calculation of the traditional method, and points outthe shortcomings in them. Using numerical simulation method to analyze the distribution ofstress in the embankment, Putting forward the superimposed stress calculation method thatconsidered the spread of the embankment stress.(3) Put the theory of the layered filling introduced to the traditional delaminationsummation-method. Combined with the compression curve equation and the settlement curvecharacteristics which required from settlement observation, to improved traditionaldelamination summation-method. Contrast the calculated result by this method and measuredcurve, and the results show the method accord with accuracy.(4) Using Plaxis analysis soft soil layer thickness, drainage condition, the filling velocityand the filling interval how to influence the settlement calculation.
