| Historical silk fabric is one of the most previous Chinese culture heritages and of great value in science, art and history. Due to its protein composition and the existence of amorphous region in its structure, silk fabric is easily degraded by many factors. So the consolidation of the ancient silk fabrics is of great importance for further display and research. The silk fibroin/ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (SF/EGDE) system developed by our group is proved to have a significant effect on the consolidation of aged silk fabrics. However, the mechanism about the consolidation is unclear now. At the same, it is the artificial aged silk fabric that is used to study the consolidation effect of SF/EGDE system and the effect on the historical silk fabrics is not studied. Therefore, with the tests of stress-strain, color difference, fabric stiffness, FTIR,13C NMR, amino acid analysis (AAA) and FESEM, this paper focuses to discuss the interaction between EGDE and silk fabrics, EGDE and SF, SF and silk fabrics and illustrates the interaction between SF, EGDE and silk fabrics, at last. Moreover, SF/EGDE system was also used to treat the silk fabrics excavated from tomb of Prime Minister Songzhi Shi in Southern Song Dynasty to explore the consolidation effect on the ancient silk fabrics. The results are shown as follows:The strength of silk fabric consolidated with SF/EGDE is about7times higher than that of aged silk fabric. Moreover, silk fabric treated with SF/EGDE has a better thermal resistance in stress loss and color change than aged silk fabric. It shows that the color difference between consolidated and aged silk fabrics is about0.33and the fabric stiffness of consolidated silk fabrics is about0.13mN· cm higher than that of aged silk fabrics, which are thought to be acceptable in the conservation of historic textiles. The function of EGDE is to make the silk fibroin molecules in the silk fibers crosslinked by reacting with tyrosine and lysine, which makes the mechanical properties of silk fabrics improved in the molecular levels. And SF contributes to the improvements of strength of the silk fabrics in two ways. First of all, the water soluble SF films, which can be removed by the wash treatment, make the silk fibers bounded together in the form of physical adhesion. Besides, the insoluble films prepared from the reaction between EGDE and SF, which can’t be removed by the wash treatment, also adhere between the fiblers to make the strength of the silk fabrics improved. The silk fabrics excavated from the tomb of Prime Minister Songzhi Shi in Southern Song Dynasty were treated with SF/EGDE system. It shows that the breaking stress and strain increase from the state of can’t be tested to5.3Mpa and17.0%, expectively. The results from SEM/EDS show that the pollutants on the surface of fibers have been removed, which makes the color and luster improved. It also illustrates from TG and DTG that the thermal stability of the silk fabrics also increases after the consolidation. This paper confirms that SF/EGDE system has a significant consolidation effect on the aged silk fabrics, as well as on the historical silk fabrics. This paper also illustrates the mechanism when the aged silk fabrics consolidated with SF/EGDE system, providing the theory support for the SF/EGDE system in the field of historical silk conservation. It also provides useful information for the protection of historical silk fabrics... |
