As one of the main reasons that cause CNC machine tools’faults, tool status transformation, especially the tool wear, directly influences the machining accuracy of work-piece and production efficiency. For the fact that the traditional tool measurement fails to meet the high precision and high speed requirements of the mechanical processing, so the new method of tool detection is drawing more and more attention. And there are a lot of relative researches on tool measurement. The method based on image processing owns advantages such as non-contact, high precision, fast speed and intelligent expansion, and it’s widely used in detection industry. Combined with the specific project, the tool measurement technology based on image processing is studied in this paper on the basis of this background. The research result has significant meaning since it can provide important technical plan for the technology improvements of national lathes. This paper focus on researching and designing the wear measurement system based on image processing. The system includes both hardware and software, and when it starts to work, the system first acquires tool image by hardware device, then completes the processing of the image by the software part, including pre-processing, edge detection and contour extraction. After this, the system can calculate the tool wear which is actually the change in the size of the tool contour. At last, a set of high-precision tool image processing and calculation algorithm is proposed in this paper. Meanwhile, the integration of measurement system and machine tool system improves the level of machining automation. On the basis of theoretical analysis, this paper designs and achieves the online and real-time tool wear measurement system. In the end, a test about the measurement accuracy and the execution efficiency of system is completed in the paper. The results show that our system’s accuracy could reach the sub-pixel level, and the system is also good at real-time measurement.
