As a novel derivatization technology, photochemical derivatization has the advantages of simple instrument, low cost, matrix elimination etc. In this paper, the application of the photochemical derivatization for ion chromatography was investigated. The major content was composed of four chapters in this work.Chapter one systematically focuses on the application of postcolumn derivatization techniques including chemical derivatization, electrochemical derivatization, photochemical derivatization used in the chromatographic system. The feasibility of ion chromatography combined with photochemical derivatization is also pointed out. As a new photochemical derivatization method, photochemical fluorescence(PCF) is introduced in the aspects of principle, characters and applications. A brief overview of UV photolysis is provided at the same time.In chapter two, a photochemical reactor was fabricated. Performances of the reactor, such as structure, photochemical mechanism, were discussed. Using the self-made reactor, the method of ion chromatography combined with postcolumn photochemical derivatization and fluorescence detection (IC-PCF) was developed firstly for the determination of folic acid (FA) and methotraxate (MTX) in the plasma of patients being treated with rheumatoid arthritis.In chapter three, the chromatographic behaviors of ionized organic substances cabarmazepine and oxcarbazepine were studied using ion chromatography and the phenomenon of photochemical fluorescence of oxcarbazepine was firstly proposed. Using the reactor mentioned above, the determination of cabarmazepine and oxcarbazepine in the plasma of patients of epilepsy was also performed by the method of ion chromatography combined with postcolumn photochemical derivatization and fluorescence detection(IC-PCF). Excellent sensitivity and selectivity were obtained due to the combination of ion chromatography(IC) and photochemical fluorescence(PCF).In chapter four, a new method of ion chromatography coupled with UV photolysis pretreatment was established to eleminate the matrix of highly concentrated weak acid oxalate off-line, and successfully used to detect inorganic anions in concentrated weak acid oxalate.
