| The water-based acrylate polymer emulsion with excellent water resistance, weather resistance, anti-aging, antioxidant, and environmentally friendly performance, is widely used in coatings, adhesives, paper and chemicals. Cationic acrylate emulsion because of its good balance of positive and negative charge, has better application prospects and value in sewage treatment, antibacterial coatings, surface treatment of paper, fabric finishing, medical functional polymer applications, compared with anionic emulsion. Therefore, the preparation of high solid content, good stability, low viscosity cationic polyacrylate emulsion is very meaningful. This article summarized the literature review on the basis of the cationic polymer emulsion methods and application prospects. Synergy was researched between gemini surfactants and single-chain cationic surfactant CTAB and DTAB. Several factors were discussed in the process of preparation of cationic polyacrylate emulsions with high solid content,such as the ratio of the monomer, gemini amount and types, initiator dosage and polymerization temperature. The kinetics of emulsion polymerization reaction was explored, and the performance of the latex film was also initially investigated, which provided a valuable theoretical basis for the preparation of high solid content, good stability cationic polymer emulsion.Conductivity method was used to research complex synergies between cationic gemini surfactants——N,N’-didodecyl-N,N,N’,N’-tetramethyl-N,N’-hexanediyl-di-ammonium dibromide (G12-6-12) with the ordinary single-chain cationic surfactant—dodecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (DTAB,), cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB).The results showed that:When CTAB and DTAB mixed with G12-6-12in a certain proportion, mixture cmc values were significantly lower.lt showed that the mixture had certain synergies; On the same ratio, the synergy of CTAB mixing with G12-6-12was obviously observed than that of DTAB and G12-6-12mixed with strongeries.Cationic acrylate emulsion prepared with cationic Gemini surfactants displayed high polymerization stability and monomer conversion and solid content. The particle was spheroidal and uniform, the particle diameter was with a variety in30-100nm. The particle size distribution was narrow. All the emulsions obtained displayed quite good storage stability, dilution stability, centrifugal stability and acid-alkali stability.The particle size decreased as the G12-6-12dosage increased,and the perfomance of the emulsion can be largely influenced by CTAB dosage. When CTAB dosage was too large or too small,all emulsions displayed lower polymerization stability and monomer conversion and solid content,but gel content became larger. While CTAB dosage was in an appropriate range, all emulsions displayed higher polymerization stability and monomer conversion and solid content,which was close to the theoretical value40%.Monomer types significantly affected the solid content of cationic emulsion. Excessive amount of MMA made polymerization stability and solid content decreased,but the gel content and particle diameter became larger. Monomer ratio had little impact on polyacrylate particle size,and all the emulsions obtained displayed quite low viscosity(<60mPa.s).Polymerization temperature and initiator dosage had little impact on polyacrylate particle size; the particle size distribution was wide as temperature was high,but polymerization stability and solid content were obviously declined.Investigation of polymerization process indicated that the particle diameter of polyacrylate had no significant change in the early polymerization (<20min),and then it increased gradually, it wouldn’t change any more in the late polymerization (>150min) as less than1%Gi2-6-12was used. While more than9%G12-6-12was used, the particle diameter increased gradually during the whole polymerization. All the emulsions obtained displayed quite good storage stability, dilution stability, centrifugal stability and acid-alkali stability.Under the experimental conditions, all the emulsions showed good film-forming properties,and the latex film displayed good water resistance and adhesion. |
