| As a new drive technology of electronic control surface tension changes of micro-fluidics,electro-wetting on dielectric has the advantages of large modulation amplitude, low energyconsumption, fast response, and can be repeated etc. Constrained by the physical and chemicalproperties of water, there are many drawbacks, such as volatility, poor thermal stability, and narrowoperating temperature range. Ionic liquids which were constituted by anions and cations have thesuperiorities of a wide range of liquid, less volatile, non-flammable, good electrical conductivity, large hot melt, vapor pressure. Thus, the ionic liquids could be the solution of the drawbacks of thetraditional conductive media. In this research work, the electro-wetting of ionic liquids was investigated. First analyzed thetheory and applications of electro-wetting, and pointed out the shortcomings of the traditionalelectro-wetting. With fully studied and master the physical and chemical properties of ionic liquids, the ionic liquids instead of the traditional water or inorganic salt solutions in electro-wetting wasproposed. On the theoretical side, the Berger’s model was discussed in detail, and simulated byCOMSOL MULTIPHYSICS workplace on electric field intensity distribution as well as contactangel. In the experiments, using own experimental apparatus and focusing explore different fillingphase, AC and DC voltage signal on the wetting properties of the ionic liquids. Finally, the volumeof ionic liquids droplet impact on its wetting characteristics was discussed, and the ionic liquidsboundary instability phenomenon was also observed. |
