The mixing of magnesium ptfe high-energy mixture and inorganic or organic metal oxide to produce composite high energy material (Mg/Teflon) is often used in simulation infrared radiant. But recently, the composite are more used to the ignition composition existing in the composite propellant or double-base propellant. The paper presented the investigation process and results of formulation design to the new high energy Mg/Teflon ignition composition, based on magnesium powder/ptfe as the basic ingredients of the formulation design research.The12types of initial formulation can be selected by detecting how a single additive has effect on the Mg/Teflon burning rate combined with the cohesion of catalysts and antioxidant. This12initial formulation were tested the performance through the combustion rate at atmosphere, the solid content of combustion resultant, the p-t curve at closed bomb, the combustion heat, the flame temperature, the vacuum stability, and the ignition ability. The ultimate optimal formulation is Mg64%, Teflon28%. NaF1.5%, MnO26.2%. NaN30.3%deciding by the first orthogonal experiment and the second orthogonal test. These formulations have been conducted for performance testing including50%ignition distance and ignition curves, the combustion and ignition performance, the chemical stability, the sensitivity, and the hygroscopicity at atmosphere. The developed high energy ignition composition based on the Mg/Teflon has been experimented by an array of performance testing. It is indicated that this ignition composition has some advantages including the high output energy, the high of solid ratio in the combustion resultant, the long ignition duration, the good sensitivity, chemical stability, and the small hygroscopicity etc. It would be easier for ignition of propellant, especially for composite propellant with difficult to ignite. The ignition composition may be the substitute for black powder. Its high ignition efficiency can be determined by itself rating characteristics.
