Flexible composites are composed of fiber reinforcement material and polymer matrix, which is benefit for their applications in raincoat, kayak, tent, geotextile. soft water or oil containter etc. The flexible composites usually suffer from stab or puncture damage in the service life caused by sharp objects or rocks. There is high practical value to study the puncture properties of flexible compositesThe damage morphology and failure mechanism of flexible composite reinforced by2/1twill woven fabric and coated with TPU (thermoplastic urethane) resin under quasi-static stabbing loading were analyzed in this paper. The main research contents include:(â… ) The quasi-static stab tests of the typical flexible woven composite were conducted on MTS-810testing machine.(â…¡) The load-displacement curves and deformation morphologies of the composites samples during the puncture process were obtained and analyzed.(â…¢) The geometric models of woven fabric reinforcement and the matrix was established respectively.(â…£) The loads on the woven fabric reinforcement and the matrix during the failure progress were calculated and superposed according to the strain energy principle.(â…¤) The theoretical load-displacement curve obtained from the analytical model was compared with experimental results.(â…¥) Based on the comparison between experimental and theoretical results, the damage mechanism, influence factors and failure criteria of the puncture performance of flesxible composite were summarized and discussed. The research contents and method in present paper will provide a theory basis for the structural design and optimization of the flexible composites. The proposed analytical model based on the geometrical structure can predict and analyze the puncture performance of the flexible composites.
