Polypropylene (pp) is well-performed and widely used polymer material, and inorganic filler is often added to improve its property in industrial application. However, they can’t be compatible greatly as the polar difference between PP and inorganic filler, which affect greatly the its performance and limit its use. To improve its compatibility with the filler or other polar polymers, polar maleic anhydride was used to graft PP (PP-g-MAH). In order to be able to industrial production of maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene, this paper has studied the process conditions ofmaleic anhydride grafted polypropyleneprepared on melt grafting process and tested application performance of maleic anhydridegrafted polypropylene.Firstly, Maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene was prepared in the laboratory SHJ-20extruder. The influence of three different initiating agents on maleic anhydride grafting rate was investigated, so we chose DCP as initiating agent in our study. Moreover, the effect law of the amout of maleic anhydride、initiating agent and additive was also investigated, so we have found the optimal ratio of raw materials for laboratory SHJ-20extruder was PP:MAH: DCP:St=100:4.5:0.3:2. The grafting rate was1.45%.Secondly, based on the process in the lab, we planned16preparation process.And industrial product trial was performed in the factory SHJ-75extruder. Choosing grafting rate and product coloras the indexes, we determined better process parameters, but the smell is bad when maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene was applied in the industrial process. Based on the result, we adjusted the raw material ratio and we finially prepared maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene which has white color, little smell and high grafting rate. The optimal ratio of raw material in factory SHJ-75extruder was PP:MAH:DCP:St=100:1.2:0.4:2.5. The temperature of extrudersuccessively is140℃,170℃,190℃,190℃,190℃,190℃,190℃,190℃,190℃,210℃,210℃,170℃,180℃. Both the host and feed speed are18Hz. Product property indexes:grafting rate was1.09%, melt index was96g/min.Finally, the application performance of maleic anhydride-grafted polypropylene was tested. The effect law of mechanical properties、crystalline properties and crystallization kinetics of glass fiber reinforced polypropylene was investigated. The results have showed: Maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene added to glass fiber reinforced polypropylene can improve the mechanical properties, especially impact strength, which increase from33.8J/m to52.7J/m.However, it doesn’t have effect on crystalline properties.Crystallization kineticshave indicated the addition of maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene did not change the way of the nucleation and growth of the glass fiber reinforced polypropylene.
