Mud pump is one of the main equipments of drilling. Cylinder liner is one of thefragile components of the mud pump. Once the cylinder liner fails to work, it has tostop the mud pump to change a new one, which will waste a lot of time and energy,and will be harmful to economic benefit. Therefore, improving the performance life ofthe mud pump liner became a top priority. Sialon is a kind of ceramic materials withhigh strength, high hardness, high-temperature resistance, corrosion resistance,resistance to friction etc. Sialon ceramics material have many kinds of significantgood characteristic, so it is used in drilling mud pump cylinder liner of themanufacturing economy is taken seriously more and more, it is the developmentdirection of the future, and in recent years in the actual production of a wide range ofapplications.The paper introduces the present situation and development of mud pump liner,and describes the present situation of modern ceramic materials. It mainly introducesSialon material classification, characteristics, preparation method, and applicationsituation. This paper also analyzes and summarizes the failure reasons of the cylinderliner, analyses the stress of cylinder liner in working state. The structure and size ofSialon ceramic liner is designed based on the cylinder of Mud Pump GP-5. In theSialon ceramic liner Sialon is used as inner and45#steel as outer layer.This paper intends to focus on the development of mud pump cylinder liner usingSialon ceramic, and to improve the cylinder liner’s life. The material friction and wearproperties were analyzed. The preliminary Sialon ceramics material formula was putforward. The further optimization has made to determine the Sailon formula, thestructure of cylinder liner, and the mechanical processing through the analyses ofabrasive wear test results. Finally the full size test was done. The test results showsthat the objective of the reaserch is reached and the designs of the Sailon formula andcylinder structure, as well as the manufacture procees is feasible. The performances ofthe ceramic liner can meet the requirements of mud pump.
