Continuous casting tundish is playing an important role in the modern steelmaking that not only acts as a distributor between ladles and molds, but also provides the significant opportunity for removal of nonmetallic inclusions from molten steel. The condition of tundish will directly affect the production of high quality of steel. The reasonable control of molten steel flow is crucial for the inclusion removal in the tundish. Therefore, it has important scientific and practical guidance significances for developing the tundish flow control technology. In this paper, the flow characteristics in the tundish were studied by using mathematical and physical simulations according to the slab practical production process in one domestic steel corporation, and one scheme of flow control devices for cleaning the molten steel in the tundish. In addition, the effectiveness of applying the optimal flow control devices to the actual performance was investigated. The main contents and results obtained are as follows:(1) The appropriate combination of turbulence inhibitor, one weir and one dam and the combination of turbulence inhibitor, one weir and two dams can improve the flow characteristics in tundish. And case DL-02is the best one for the flow control within those cases of the combination of turbulence inhibitor, one weir and one dam. While case DL-12is the best one for the flow control within those cases of the combination of turbulence inhibitor, one weir and two dams.(2) The dam located near the outlet in the case DL-12can avoid the steel freezing in the outlet at the beginning of casting, so case DL-12is the best one for the flow control in the tundish.(3) Inclusion controlling reaches a perfect level with the use of optimized flow control scheme in the tundish.Inclusions larger than30μm are effectively removed.
