With the fast development of state economy and the growing enterprise competition, the demands on the machine tool manufacturing industry also increase. How to reach high-precision, high-speed, high-efficiency in a short period of time at low cost, it is urgent to solve this problem. The design method of machine tool structure is using experience on analog or local improvement. This makes it slightly weak in the development and research of new machine tool tasks, and manufacturing machine material waste. The new effective design methods need to be studied.This subject is funded by National Science and Technology Support Program "the ’concept-unit’ technology of machine tool lightweight design and applications"(NO.2011BAF11B03). This paper focuses on the content of the research, absorbs experience of research group, studies characteristics and classification of the machine tool support member and the cellular structure. Based on the cellular and the support member combination to do size and performance optimal selection, and obtained design method The main contents are as follows:1. Research on structural feature of supporting members in10machine tool, this paper focused on looking for geometry in common of supporting members whose internal contain the rib structure, classified according to their geometric characteristics. The process characteristics of the supporting member were summaried, and the every type of supporting members’suffered loads and constraints characteristics were analysed.2. The concept of cellular structure was proposed, and the role of the cellular in the supporting member was explained. Classification of cellular structure was based on its characteristics analysis, and its process characteristics were briefly described. Making plane-type cellular as an example, the physical properties of cellular were studied by using pull, pressure, bending, and twisting basic load.3. Taking column of vertical machining center for example, its internal structure was filled with different plane-type cellular to obtain the cellular combination model. The size of the support wall, cellular structure type and its size were acted as the design variables. The ANSYS Workbench was used to get dimension optimization based on the response surface methodology, and finally machine tools supporting member’s different combination of cellular structures and their sizes’physical properties were acquired.4. Based on these basic technology researches, the design method of cellular structure for machine tools’support members is refined, its design process is given in detail, and the effectiveness of the proposed method is proved with an example.
