Functionalized low molecular weight polystyrene (PS) was synthesized viafriedel-crafts acylation reactions by using toluene-p-sulfonyl chloride and aluminumchloride as catalyst. The structure of obtained polymer was investigated by1H-NMR,fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermal behavior of polymers wasperformed by differential scanning calorimetry analyses and TGA. Using thisfunctionalized low molecular weight polystyrene as main solvent to separation ofaromatic hydrocarbons (benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene and xylenes) from C4to C10aliphatic hydrocarbon mixtures. In this work, we investigated the separation oftoluene from heptane by extraction with composite solvent. Functionalized lowmolecular weight polystyrene as main solvent can offer several advantages: hightemperature stability, less complex processes, high selectivity and distributioncoefficients of composite solvent is due to higher polar character of this solvent whichmakes it superior to other solvents for the extraction of aromatics from alkanes. Amore simple regeneration of the solvent. Composite solvent showed an optimalcombination of a high toluene distribution coefficient and a high toluene/n-heptaneselectivity. Therefore, a suitable composite solvent to replace the others solvent for anindustrial extraction process for the separation of aromatic and aliphatichydrocarbons.
