Hexavalent chromium [Cr(Ⅵ)] is a typical pollutant from the electroplating industry. Due to its toxicity, carcinogenicity and mutagenicity, Cr(Ⅵ) was identified as one of the five priority-control heavy metal pollutants in our country. The assessment of best available techniques (BAT) for hexavalent chromium pollution prevention and control in electroplating industry and the screening the combination of BAT have theoretical guidance and practical significance to the sustainable development of chromium plating industry. On the basis of introducing the research progress of hexavalent chromium pollution prevention and control on details, this paper assessed electroplating techniques, cleaning techniques and hexavalent chromium pollution (including gas, water and sludge) prevention and control techniques using analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and fuzzy comprehensive evaluation (FCE). The optimized BAT combination for the prevention and control of hexavalent chromium pollution was finally obtained.Through investigating the discharge and the pollution status of hexavalent chromium in electroplating industry, the hexavalent chromium emission nodes were determined and the analysis of hexavalent chromium pollution sources were competed. The features of plating process, the research progress of hexavalent chromium pollution prevention and control techniques and BAT were introduced, and the assessment index system of BAT for hexavalent chromium pollution prevention and control in plating industry was established with AHP. Assessing the pollution prevention and control techniques for hexavalent chromium in electroplating industry were assessed using AHP combined with FCE.Based on the assessment results integrated with literature review, expert consultation and practical investigations, the pollution prevention and control techniques of hexavalent chromium were screened, forming the combination of BAT to provide support and reference to the development of electroplating industry involving hexavalent chromium.
