The filling capacity of liquid alloys is an important performance of alloys,good filling capacity is prerequisite to obtain a complete shape, a clear outlinefor casting. Therefore, the research on the filling ability of cast alloy is important.This paper designed a new visualization dynamic testing device of cast alloyfilling capacity, the improvements were based on the original mechanical testmethod. The original shape of the two boxes was changed into a single box style,with a transparent high-temperature quartz glass instead of the under box toachieve the visualization of filling process. With a CCD camera under the quartzglass, the image acquisition card captured pictures to get the flow length and theinstantaneous flow front velocity of liquid alloy in real-time. Visual Basic6.0was applied to design the interface, on which the images of the filling processand a variety of filling process data were presents in real-time. When pouring theliquid alloy, the automatic pouring of the device under computer control wasachieved, the real-time temperature of the liquid metal in the graphite cup wasmonitored by computer via the PCI data acquisition card. When temperaturereached the preset pouring temperature, the motor operated to rise the piston rodplugged the bottom of the graphite cup with liquid metal following into the cavity.This design ensured the consistency of filling speed and the accuracy of pouringtemperature, and the overflow tank on the cup could make the pouring of moltenmetal have the same filling pressure head each time, to ensure that the test devicehas much higher repeatability.The debugged device was applied to test the influence of pouring temperatureon the filling ability of Al-20%Si alloy, concluded that, with the rise of thepouring temperature, the filling capacity of Al-20%Si alloy continued to increase.
