Laser hardening, an advanced forming and surfacing technology, has a wide application. Because of its characteristics, such as improving the quality of the workpeice and lasting the life of the materials, it was widely applied in many kinds of industrial area.In this thesis, a method of laser hardening detection and control system was presented, the design of detection and control system were investigated. First, the principle and characteristic of laser hardening was elaborated, according to the development trend in the world, the advantages and disadvantages were summarized in this paper. The traditional method that improved the quality of laser hardening was laser parameter optimization, but this method had many limits. In order to realize the automation in laser hardening and improve the quality of laser hardening, this paper presented a closed loop control method in laser hardening process, which can realize the hardened band width’s real time detection and control through changing the velocity of the work table. The design method of hardware system was elaborated, which included the choice and integration of hardware equipments, in the hardware system, a lot of detection and control equipments were included, such as CCD sensor. filter, work table, image acquisition card and so on. A software system was designed during Visaul C++, which included the image gathering, image processing, and PID arithmetic and so on. The function of the software system is to realize the real time dection and contol of the hardened band width. In order to verify the feasibility of the designed system, a lot of experiments were implemented, which uses the material of45steel and the designed system. With this real-time detection system based on CCD. effects of process parameters such as scanning speed, laser power and defocus on the width of the hardened band in the single-pass laser hardening are investigated. The experiments’ results were analysized, which showed that the designed system was feasible.
