In order to study the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) design of semiconductor bridge (SCB) explosive devices (EEDs) and to search for a new reliable EMC component for better adaption of SCB EEDs to more complex electromagnetic environment, both SCB EEDs with and without reinforcement of varistors are tested in many experiments under different excitation conditions in this paper, which conclude ignition tests, electrostatic discharge tests, multiple electrostatic pulse tests, radio frequency (RF) injection tests electromagnetic radiation tests. And the laws of varistors for SCB EEDs EMC protection are obtained by those experiments, which are as followed.1) According to the results of ignition tests under capacitor discharge and constant current excitation, firing time and firing consumed energy are both no significant change no matter with or without varistors, which means varistors do no harm to electro-exploding performances of SCB EEDs.2)The two kinds of electrostatic discharge (ESD) tests indicate that varistors can effectively improve antistatic properties of typical SCB EEDs.3)In RF injection tests, the RF injection power of SCB EEDs protected by varistors can be raised to20W, which means RF sensitivity reduced significantly, and there is no visible change of electro-exploding performances after RF injection. The above results show that varistors can effectively absorb the RF energy to protect SCB EEDs against RF influence.
