The layout problem exists in the areas of automotive industries, electron, and machinery. It is meaningful to research blank nesting. In the tradition, the blanks are orientated by user. With the development of computer science, blank nesting system is invented. According to status of current research, the paper discusses the key problems of blank nesting. The research is listed below:Develop the preprocessor block based on NX software. Use Divide Curve and Point Set command to convert curve profile to line segment profile.Develop layout block for single part. Research individual part layout based on Enclosure Polygon algorithm and Vertex-Based Polygon algorithm. It contains three types:one-up, two-up and two-pair. Use these two algorithms to calculate individual part layout result.Research five order algorithms:BL algorithm, Downstairs algorithm, LHL algorithm, LHL-SA and LHL-IA. Comparing these five algorithms, the LHL-IA shows the maximum value of material utilization.Develop layout block for multiple part. Research and compare three optimization algorithms:GA, SA and GASA. The paper introduces the theory of GA and SA. Combine the merit and shortcoming between these two theories, this paper invokes GASA to layout multiple blanks. The optimization results of GA, SA and GASA are compared and analyzed. It indicates that GASA is obviously superior to GA and SA in blank nesting plan.A Blank Nesting system will be developed based on the research. It can automatically optimize blank nesting orientation to get maximum material utilization based on curve profile, sheet body or solid body for individual part.
